Be a Pen Pal and Help a Senior
As the Coronavirus crisis worsens, seniors across our nation are sitting in nursing homes isolated. In hopes of protecting elders from this dangerous virus, states nationwide are prohibiting visits to facilities with a high senior population. Due to age or long-term health problems, most seniors are at higher risk of having a severe reaction from the virus. Their dangerous vulnerability means they have to isolate themselves from others, even their family and friends. Though this plan is helping seniors stay safe in this uncertain time, it is also making them lonelier. By not having any physical contact and little to no social interaction, seniors become even more susceptible to depression. During this critical time in our history, we must come together to help our elders and those in most need. If you have a loved one in a nursing home or have free time, why not brighten up a senior’s day with a care package? Just like everyone else, seniors love to be remembered. Why not send handwritten letters, photos, or books to someone in need? A simple, uplifting book can transport a senior from their current surroundings to a new place! Seniors love to receive notes, and they especially love when they are made with love and care. Use the time you have to invest in someone else who desperately needs to be remembered. By practicing empathy, we can make this world a better place. I am sure the senior who receives any gift from the outside world will be so grateful.
Readers, if you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, call your nearest medical facility and seek care right away. If you have an underlying condition like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or respiratory conditions, stay away from crowded areas or places. These guidelines were provided by both the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no need to panic but stay informed.
OurSeniors.org is on a mission to reach out to isolated seniors in the local community. Help bring joy to their lives by donating or volunteering to visit a facility. A little mindfulness can go a long way. We hope you enjoy this winter season from our team at OurSeniors.org.
